Maiasa is a sanctuary where tradition meets modern well-being, offering a place for rituals and community. We aim to elevate daily rituals and moments of self-care to help balance busy modern lives.
Tea, particularly, has long been celebrated for its health benefits and its role in supporting mindfulness and tranquillity. Our single-origin matcha, sourced from one of the most unique and high-quality tea fields in the mountains of Japan, transforms each cup into a ritual of reset, delivering sustained energy and extraordinary health benefits with each serving.
Inspired by the Japanese culture and tea traditions, our curated collection of premium matcha, green teas, tea accessories, and home and beauty objects enhances physical and mental well-being. We honour the craftsmanship and beauty of traditional arts, preserving centuries-old knowledge, and create objects that seamlessly blend this heritage into modern life.
OUR UNIQUE CEREMONIAL GRADE MATCHA
For centuries, Buddhist monks would start their days of meditation by drinking matcha. It allowed them to maintain clarity of mind and a sense of calm as well as long-lasting energy for the many hours ahead. In contrast to coffee, which often leads to a quick spike and crash in energy levels, matcha contains low levels of caffeine. It is rich in the unique amino acid L-theanine, which promotes a sense of tranquillity while providing sustained and balanced energy throughout the entire day. Furthermore, matcha is abundant in antioxidants and rich in vitamins A, C, E, K and B-complex, contributing to our health and beautiful ageing.
Our single-origin matcha is sourced from the highest-quality tea fields in the dense and mountainous Sōraku District of Japan. These fields, inaccessible to cars and tourism, have preserved the purity and tranquility of their history and traditions. Our unique cultivar grows in only 3% of Japan’s tea cultivation area and is characterized by its vivid green color and rich, smooth flavour. It is naturally sweet without bitterness, with nuanced notes of green pear and mango, and a beautiful umami finish.
Unlike other farms, we harvest only once a year to ensure the optimal health of our fields and plants. Our matcha powder is then meticulously produced using traditional stone-grinding techniques, a rare and time-honoured process that sets us apart as one of the few companies preserving this ancient method. To ensure the best quality for each drink at home, all our tea is freshly ground in small batches.
We work closely together with a single farmer. With six generations of tea farming legacy, he cultivates his land with great care and dedication. Unlike the commercial markets and their mass-production methods, we believe in the beauty of small-scale and selective tea production, prioritising the highest quality and people behind our product.
Our dedication to these fields and traditional practices results in a ceremonial grade matcha of unparalleled quality. Each cup becomes a luxurious ritual of reset and sustained energy, embodying the true essence of Japanese tea culture, its history, and incredible health benefits.
The Timeless Beauty of Japanese Craftsmanship: Merging Tradition with Modern Design
The pursuit of well-being goes beyond what we consume — it extends to the environment we live in and the objects we interact with.
In Japanese culture, there is a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry of handmade objects. Rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi, it cherishes the beauty in imperfection and the transient nature of all things. Artisans pour their heart and spirit into their work, creating pieces that are more than just functional items—they become objects with a story that elevates the experience of using them in daily life.
Our ceramics, tea accessories and home objects embody this tradition and craftsmanship, celebrating the beauty and history of Japanese artistry. Each piece, with its unique variations, reflects the dedication and skill of the artisans.
We find beauty in merging this heritage with modern craftsmanship, both in Japan and beyond. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary design, we create objects that honour the past while complementing our modern lives.
With an inclination towards natural and durable materials like stone, wood, and metals, we can create an atmosphere of tranquillity and longevity in our living spaces. Alongside their aesthetic appeal, these materials remind us of the importance of sustainability and our connection to the natural world in a society where this is often lost.
Sustainability in production and packaging
We are deeply committed to environmental responsibility and strive to make conscious choices in every aspect of our business.
Our Maiasa packaging is 100% paper, and our pouches are biodegradable. Our paper box is carbon neutral and made with FSC-certified paper and BIO-vegan ink. Through extensive research, we have discovered new and innovative paper resources for the protective lining of our pouches, effectively preserving the freshness of our matcha powder while distinguishing us as one of the few companies exclusively using all-paper-based packaging for tea.
We rely on recycled carton materials to protect and fill our boxes, and our cotton draw-string bags are crafted from unbleached, organic cotton and vegetal ink.
Please ensure our packaging’s responsible disposal by recycling and re-using after use.
Founder
Renee Kemps is a photographer working primarily in the interior, architecture and design field. Her work is unequivocally influenced by minimalism, as she has the desire to document spaces and places around her in their purest form. This dedication to authenticity and genuine portrayal shines through in her photographs, capturing the true essence of her subjects, often in a fleeting moment of sunlight and shadowplay.
Following over a decade of successfully working with brands internationally and returning to Japan for work almost every year, a desire to create this business was born.
Inspired by her frequent visits to Japan and the profound calmness and sense of well-being she experienced during tea ceremonies, she envisioned a platform that would merge the essence of the Japanese tradition with modern well-being — a celebration of authenticity, and the pursuit of a balanced lifestyle, providing others with the tools and inspiration to enhance their well-being through these small daily rituals in our day-to-day lives.
