The art of making chasen, the traditional Japanese matcha whisks, has become a rare and treasured skill. Only a few households across the entire country are still engaged in this time-honoured craft. It is passed down exclusively from father to son, and has been for generations.

Our chasen master is a 20th generation craftsmen, and is renowned for his exceptional talent and unique style of working with slimmer lengths of bamboo, creating much gentler curvature to the whisk prongs than most whisks on the market. These whisks ensure beautiful, even frothing and elegant preparation for your matcha.

Each chasen is meticulously handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo, revealing the mastery and precision involved in their creation. The process is performed solely with a small knife, reflecting the traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.

Our matcha chasen come in two variations: natural bamboo and natural dark bamboo. Most dark bamboo versions have more of a rare, cloud-like pattern. Each has their unique size and shape. All all accompanied by a Maiasa green thread.

To ensure the longevity of your chasen, it is essential to handle it with care. To prepare your whisk for your matcha preparation, soak in warm water for a few minutes to enhance its flexibility and avoid breaking of the sprongs. After each use, rinse and clean with water to remove any residual matcha. Store your whisk upside down on a chasen holder to keep in its optimal shape.
