Footed Japanese Tea Bowl – Brown
In Japanese culture, there is a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry of ceramics, often instilled with a sense of spirituality and respect. This profound appreciation extends to both the objects themselves and the processes behind their creation, rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which values the beauty in imperfection and the transient nature of all things.
Artisans pour their heart and spirit into their work, and this dedication is believed to be reflected in the final product. The ceramic pieces have a sense of life and presence, transforming them into more than just functional items—they become objects with a story and a connection to the artisan who created them. This reverence for the soul of ceramics aligns with the Japanese emphasis on mindfulness and the appreciation of everyday objects, elevating the experience of using them in daily life.
Our bowls encapsulate this ethos and the art of tea drinking. Crafted in the southeastern Tōno region of Gifu Prefecture, they are made from only local clay. Designed like traditional bowls to cover the face and in particular the eyes when drinking, they ensure that nothing else commands attention but the essence of how and what we drink. The open shape fits perfectly in a double open hand, inviting a complete sensory experience with each use. These cups blend elegance and functionality, enhancing the ritual of tea drinking and celebrating the beauty of Japanese ceramic artistry.
Our brown bowls feature a beautiful dark matte glaze, reminiscing of earth and fired clay.
Each has slight variations, emphasising the unique beauty of a handmade product.
